never mind, it wasn’t the AjaxPing but the page included various subcomponents that themselves included subs and one of them had a periodic AjaxUpdateContainer set to update every 2 seconds. And that particular component was included on other pages as well. So even navigating away did not stop the ping (well, it did but the next page initiated the periodic again)
